SPIRITUAL ACTIVATION: UNCOVERING PURPOSE, PASSION, AND POWER TO TAKE INSPIRATION INTO ACTION!
with JULIA BUTTERFLY
The world is calling us to awaken and ACTIVATE our highest potential to live lives of effective service.  Join in a talk and conversation with Julia Butterfly Hill around uncovering and unlocking our gifts and transforming our blocks and challenges into our greatest contributions.

Julia Butterfly Hill brought international attention to the plight of the world's last remaining ancient forests when she climbed 180 feet into the branches of a 1000 year-old redwood tree and refused to come down.  Her historic protest to the environmental destruction caused by the clear-cutting of ancient redwoods culminated after 738 days with a negotiated agreement that provided permanent protection for the tree known as Luna and a 3 acre buffer-zone around it.

Julia Butterfly Hill is an activist, a writer and a poet.  She is the author of the national best seller The Legacy of Luna and the co-author of One Makes The Difference, both published by Harper SanFrancisco.   The audio release, Spiritual Activation, captures Julia's vital message as it is given at standing-room-only appearances across the country.  All of Julia's books (and the packaging for the CD) have been published with 100% post-consumer recycled paper with soy-based inks and chlorine-free processing, insisting on a higher standard of ecological sustainability in the publishing industry.

The recipient of numerous prestigious awards and distinctive honors, Julia Butterfly Hill is one of the most internationally recognizable figures in environmental activism.  In 1999, she found the organization, Circle of Life, an has since co-founded The Engage Network, and is a founding and on-going donor and advisor for Women's Earth Alliance amongst numerous other projects and organizations she works with.

Julia Butterfly Hill speaks regularly on university campuses, has addressed the United Nations, lobbied congress, and has continued to stand on the front lines of environmental and social justice issues all over the world.  Her courage, conviction and profound clarity in articulating a message of hope, empowerment and love and respect for all life has inspired millions of people worldwide.

YOGA, FILM AND COMMUNITY EDUCATION SERIES
Sept 10th 7pm -
The public is invited to a screening of "9/11: Press for Truth," an award-winning documentary of the story of the Jersey widows in their struggle for truth (7pm, Friday 9/10, JivamukTea Cafe). The evening will feature  a talk by 9/11 first responder health care advocate Ken George.

Sat Sept 11th 11am-
Open class with Satyavira Matthew Lombardo.
Donations will be collected for Feal Good Foundation, a 9/11 1st responder advocacy group.

In the fall of 2006, a study by Mt. Sinai confirmed what hundreds of first responders and concerned citizens have known for years: exposure to the air at the WTC after 9/11 causes serious illness. The study discovered that 7 out of every 10 first responders developed respiratory problems. Rates of lung disease, asthma, and cancer were abnormally high. Those afflicted with health problems found their lives transformed by a barrage of ailments: migraines, shortness of breath, abdominal pains, heavy bleeding, memory loss and vertigo, and in the worst cases lung, brain and blood cancers:
The failure of the federal, state and local governments to care for 9/11 first responders began immediately following 9/11. Reports have shown that the EPA and the White House, though fully aware of the toxic effects of the air in Lower Manhattan, covered up the facts and misled the public to believe that health precautions were not necessary. In the years after 9/11, initial funds allocated to help first responders proved inadequate, and no one has stepped in to help treat first responders and support their families
While Congress and the White House wrestle over how much to spend and who to give it to, first responders are dying. Studies have shown strong evidence of a link between WTC exposure and serious illness, yet insurance and government agencies have resisted providing the help many first responders need. Despite these struggles, individuals and organizations have stepped in to help raise public awareness and first responders directly.

2010 GLOBAL MALA YOGA FOR PEACE EVENT
The Global Mala Project Yoga for Peace is now in its eighth year, and will again take place in New York, and in cities around the world.   The intention of this worldwide event is clear:   to create peace in the world through Yoga, by coming together and performing 108 Sun Salutations together, in unison, and then in singing Kirtan together.  One heart, one mind, one purpose.
Why the Global Mala Yoga for Peace Event?  It is our belief that Peace begins within.   We are the unit of peace.   The Global Mala Yoga for Peace event is a demonstration of how a group can generate Peace, through the performance of 108 Sun Salutations.      Creating harmony and peace within creates harmony and peace throughout the world.
This event also holds as its intention that we are responsible for Peace and that Peace begins with ME.   That Peace is our responsibility;  that Peace is a choice, and we can choose Peace at every moment throughout our day.  So, let us come together and create a massive Mala of Peace.

"SWEEPING THE DUST" BOOK RELEASE PARTY
With Author and Beloved Yoga Teacher Ruth Lauer-Manenti. Hosted by Sharon Gannon and David Life
Jivamukti Yoga School will celebrate the launch of the second book of Ruth Lauer Manenti's, titled Sweeping the Dust published by Lantern Books.
For many years at the Jivamukti Yoga School in New York City and throughout the country, popular and highly regarded yoga teacher Ruth Lauer-Manenti (affectionately known as "Lady Ruth") has been offering her students "dharma talks" stories from her life that accompany her classes and represent the yogic commitments to ahimsa (non- violence), compassion, and service. The teachings she gives are simplistic, yet poignant and memorable.
In Sweeping the Dust, you'll find over forty of these talks, which are accompanied by a reading from classic Hindu scripture, and composed with humor and sensitivity. Sweeping the Dust is the perfect gift for the aspiring yogin and any spiritual seeker wanting to live with thoughtfulness and integrity. The book is dedicated to the loved and revered ashtanga yoga teacher Sri K Pattabhi Jois, who in May 2009, at 94 years young, left his body.
The Forward is written by Sharon Gannon, Co-Founder of the Jivamukti Yoga method, world-renowned yoga teacher, animal rights activist, musician, artist, and renaissance woman.
For more information, visit www.saraswatishands.org, jivamuktiyoga.com, and lanternbooks.com. Ruth's first  book "An Offering of Leaves," was released September 2009 by Lantern.

"Ruth's stories reveal the teacher in each passing day; the magician in each sunrise and sunset; and the wisdom of a smile and a wink. Ruth is like Sakshi, the witness to all the comings and goings of life, who provides the detachment of liberated living."
David Life, Co-Founder of the Jivamukti Yoga Method

POWERFUL KIRTAN WITH ARJUN BABA
Arjun has  been studying and chanting bhajan and kirtan since 1996,
when he attended multi-weekly kirtan in NYC , mostly with
krishna das and bhagavan das. (Mostly  also at Jivamukti Yoga School in the old location at Lafayette St.)
In 1998 he  went to India for the first time. That's where He  really began his understanding of kirtan through much searching for the powerful kirtan experience. He returns to India every 2-3 years for close to half a year each visit.
In the West; Satsang with Amma, Narayan Maharaj and their devotees; Iskon and Neem Karoli devotees have all inspired his experience.
In 1999 He produced his first kirtan cd Bhajan Anandi Vol1,
which was, to his surprise, very well received.
Since then he has recorded Bhajan Anandi Vol 2&3, and Bhajan Ananadi Vol 5 is out this summer 2008.  He continues to hold public Kirtan around the country and world, as well as performing with Arjun & Guardians, and Fanna Fi Allah Qawwali Party.

"Arjun is the real deal" -
Ganeshdas aka Carlos Menjivar (Managing Director  Jivamukti Yoga School)

"Arjun's music comes from a deep place, it reveals so much and connect the listener to so much more" - Matthew Lombardo: Certified Jivamukti Yoga Teacher.

KIRTAN WITH ANJULA PRASAD
Anjula was raised in a very devotional family that revered Indian classical music as one of the highest forms of spirituality. While growing up, she frequently traveled throughout India, where she learned to chant and discovered how fulfilling it was to express her devotion through her own voice.
