Future suffering is to be avoided

Patanjali's Yoga Sutras II.16

Soon, everything will change, and we will be launched into new dimensions of existence. Our preparations should begin immediately, because whatever we do right now will determine the future.

The accumulation of resonance from your enduring spiritual practice is creating a spaceship. Not the interstellar Star Trek variety with metal and fuel and fire, etc., but an intra-dimensional, organic spaceship called Earth. It is true, in the past we have created an Earth that was a time bomb rather than a vehicle for intra-dimensional travel, but the right time for change has arrived! You can begin by feeling the Earth under you and the atmosphere surrounding you. Feel our movement through space-very fast. Feel the spin and the wobble.

All around you is the complex engine that drives us through space and time. It is the precious metals and crystals under the ground; it is in the network of waters spreading from under the ground to the surface and into the atmosphere. The engine is composed of the tendrils of a small vine and the trunk of the oldest tree, as well the pyramids and the standing stone and the mouse that lives under it.

We will construct our Earthship from the elements (mahabhutas: Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Aether) using tanmatra, the infra-atomic potential between the elements and nature. The tanmatra determines the form that the elements take, or you could say, how the world appears. The elements have infinite potential combinations, but only those appear to us that are called forth in the atmosphere through rigorous methods. Those rigorous methods appear in the world as advertising, media and internet, as well as language, class, law and legislation. The yoga practices create a different movement of tanmatra through rigorous methods, like repetition, concentration and detachment. For a yogi, the active principle for change in the world emerges from the world itself. They are five: Shabda-sound potential; Sparsha-touch potential; Rupa-sight potential; Rasa-taste potential; and Gandha-smell potential. When we can penetrate the senses beyond what we have already heard, touched, seen, tasted or smelled with yoga practice, we arrive at the tanmatric level of pure potential changing into the world. We imagine a world that sounds better, feels better, looks better, tastes better, and smells great! We propel our suggestion into the atmosphere over and over until it comes into being.

Our body/mind spaceship is assembled out of the fabric of a yoga practice and its alignment with the forces of evolution. This spaceship is made of the stuff of the Earth propelled into existence with purified thoughts of infinite potential. When you create sound physical, energetic, emotional and mental bodies, it is possible to become a contributing consciousness on spaceship Earth. When we rewire our nervous systems through asana, meditation and chanting, it becomes possible to steer the ship to the chosen destination.

Teaching Tips

The earth travels at 107,000 km/h or about 67,000 mph. That means that we are all traveling at that speed. What allows us to do this is the earth itself; the atmosphere allows us to breathe, gravity allows us to move and grow (and do yoga!), the plants feed us and the animals, insects, birds, fishes, reptiles, flora and fauna create the perfect flying machine

  • Standing poses teach us to surf the earth! Some futurists believe that the next evolution of the human species will be to merge with computers and leave these old bodies behind. Do you believe that? Many people have given up hope for future life on earth and concentrate on getting to somewhere else. Yogis believe that this is the time and this the place and we are the ones that we’ve been waiting for. So, stand up, jump into your body and into your mind and create a mutually beneficial relationship to the world under your feet and in the atmosphere around you.
  • Bird poses are especially good at teaching us to fly. Very quickly in bird poses we discover that our ability depends on conducting the force of gravity through the body, rather than defying gravity. The Earth itself conducts gravity to propel itself through space.
  • Inversions make us deeply aware of the point at which we contact the Earth. The same points of contact that we take for granted in standing positions, become lucidly plain when we are upside down. Our ease in the inversions to a large degree depends upon our ability to conduct the force of gravity through the whole body and not let it stop at one joint or another.
  • Creating group yantras by having everyone sit in concentric circles or make patterns on the floor when everyone lies on their back. Making sounds while in these shapes or patterns is very potent. Chanting in surround sound is very nice. Also, there are great exercises like “the continuously rising spiral note effect”: All people begin to sound by starting at a low range and in one long breath, moving the note to a higher octave. When you take a new breath and begin to sound, first listen, finding a particular voice in the group. Tuning with their sound, you will be able to continue ascending the scale after they run out of breath. When someone does that same thing to your ascending note, the result is a note that seems to spiral up continuously from the group right out through the ceiling.
  • Working with the elements-the Mahabhutas-is achieved through chakra tuning. Review the chakra tuning class and bija mantras. Which chakra is the residence of which element? Review which asanas directly affect the chakra and its resident element.
  • Tanmatra accumulate according to our thoughts, words and actions. Even if on the outside we appear to be doing yoga, if we maintain the same internal environment we will accumulate Tanmatras that reconstruct a world in the same way again. Remember how the entire human body is reconstructed every few months, but those new cells are restricted into forming a redundant construction of a faulty blueprint. Tanmatra redraws the blueprint when thought habits are replaced with Cosmic Consciousness.
