DISCOVER JIVAMUKTI YOGA CAMBRIDGE
1) What inspired you to open a Jivamukti Yoga studio?
My teachers Sharon Gannon and David Life, and preserving the method for the next generation.
2) How would you describe the mood of your studio in three words?
Energetic, artistic, traditional
3) What’s the most unique fact around your studio?
We are a school housed within an existing Yoga and wellbeing centre called Satyam. Our method is supported and well-established within the existing studio so opening the school was the next step. We have added more classes on our timetable to the already existing ones in Cambridge .
4) Which teachers are currently offering 500HR Jivamukti Apprenticeships at the studio?
Andrea (Radhika) Kwiatkowski
5) How does your studio contribute to the local community?
Andrea has been hosting regular events for a local homeless charity every year. The school will be continuing this work alongside other charity events.
8) Can you share a memorable moment from a class at your studio?
I was teaching a class about time, and the minute hand on the studio clock began to spin and suddenly stopped! It was an Alice in Wonderland moment! All of the students were spellbound, we began meditation and the clock went back to the start again. I can’t explain what happened but I do have a video of that moment. Magic happened right before our eyes !
9) What’s the best feedback you’ve received from a student?
A student came back to her second class with me and after class stayed behind to thank me for remembering her name. When I answered her “of course I remember you”, she told me “ No-one ever remembers my name , no-one remembers me “. It’s always stayed with me, she was tearful and it meant so much to her in that moment. The class is an environment where we should all feel seen, heard and remember who we really are.
10) What is one piece of advice you have for someone new to Jivamukti Yoga?
Come with an open heart and mind and immerse yourself in the experience. The hardest step for anyone new to Yoga is walking through the door so once you’ve done that, relax and be yourself. We will take care of you.
11) What type of classes or events do you offer that are unique to your studio?
We offer a weekly Satsang called “Eternity is Happening Now,“ named after Sharon’s newest book series. Everywhere I go and teach I’m asked about these books and lots of students and teachers are starting to realize the gems within the pages so I pick one essay as the Satsang discussion and read an excerpt , meditate or chant and then open to questions or discussion. It’s like a book club and in Cambridge we love to study and read books.
We also have a weekly dance class on our timetable with Amy – a dance and barre teacher and choreographer. Dance is rooted into the Jivamukti Yoga method and coming from a dance background myself it was one of the first classes on the timetable. We hope to add a ballet class next!
12) Can you share a fun fact about your studio’s history or inception?
The inception of the school came to me in a dream and as Master Patanjali himself said, dreams can be very informative and insightful in our lives. The studio was looking for teachers to hire / rent the space and I saw the school very clearly having a hOMe there. So the very next day I started putting the plan into place.
13) What are your future plans or goals for your studio?
To develop the teachers at the school offering them the Jivamukti Yoga Apprenticeship Programme (JTAP)and continuing our book club Satsang and dance class.
14) What do you hope students take away from their experience at your studio?
To be themselves- you don”t need to become a yogi – you already have all the attributes inside of you to be in the state of yoga kindness, compassion and generosity of spirit . As Yogis often say, it’s not about being able to touch your toes, it’s what you learn on the way down that’s important.
15) How do you stay connected with the global Jivamukti Yoga community?
Most of my dearest friends are within this community and I’ve been lucky to have been part of it for 20 years. Catching up with friends and colleagues at Tribe Gathering every year is wonderful plus traveling to visit and teach at the Jivamukti Yoga schools is always really uplifting for me.
16) What is your favorite time of day for your sadhana and why?
Late morning after a cup of tea, it’s a daily routine with extra moments in the day. I like to listen to spiritual topics on podcasts when out walking as well as practice on the mat and I read every day from a spiritual text which informs my thinking and day.
17) What is your favorite vegan recipe?
Sweetcorn chowder.
Recipe:
Onion , garlic and chilli flakes / nutritional yeast
Veg stock
Frozen or tinned sweetcorn
Oat / soya milk to blend in
