In conversation with Jivamukti Yoga Stavanger Studio Founder, Camilla Veen

1) What inspired you to open a Jivamukti Yoga studio?

Taking the 300HR Jivamukti Yoga Teacher Training in 2003 was life changing for me and it felt like a necessity to open a studio so I could share these magical practices with others.

2) How would you describe the mood of your studio in three words?

Welcoming, beautiful, warm.

3) What’s the most unique fact around your studio?

We are very close to the sea and so we offer classes in combination with an ocean dip, several times a week. We have also built two different types of saunas that are opening soon.

4) Which teachers are currently offering 500HR Jivamukti Apprenticeships at the studio?

Camilla Veen, Tone Haugland, Terese Arildsdatter Riis.

5) How does your studio contribute to the local community?

We offer free Meditation every morning, seven days a week. For many years we have offered free Yoga classes twice a week to people who have, or have had cancer. We have also for many years been part of the ‘Back in the Ring’ organization, offering free Yoga classes to people  with drug addiction issues.

7) What is your favorite Jivamukti Yoga sequence and why?

I love the short – but sweet – element of the Magic ten warm-up and never miss it before

practicing. Warrior-to-sage is another classic that I really appreciate. It is the backbone when I create my own standing sequences.

8) Can you share a memorable moment from a class at your studio?

After almost 20 years of being in operation it is hard to pick just one… If I have to choose, I think I would say the first ever Yoga class I taught there in April 2005, and of course, the occasions in which we have hosted Sharon and David.

9) What’s the best feedback you’ve received from a student?

«I am addicted!»

10) What is one piece of advice you have for someone new to Jivamukti Yoga?

Trust the practice, trust the process.

11) What type of classes or events do you offer that are unique to your studio?

We have a really nice selection of classes for every life stage – so there really is no excuse to not practice…! We have different kids’ classes, pre- and post-natal, as well as Family Yoga and Senior classes.

12) Can you share a fun fact about your studio’s history or inception?

The building used to be an old factory based in the middle of Stavanger’s old working-class neighborhood. We received a price for the renovation works from the municipality of Stavanger in 2014.

13)  What are your future plans or goals for your studio?

We have included a small gym room in addition to our three Shalas and have added some training classes to our schedule. We are also opening a vegan café in the same building.

14) What do you hope students take away from their experience at your studio?

I hope they feel inspired to make yoga practices an integral part of their life and I hope they are inspired to make the change into a vegan lifestyle.

15) How do you stay connected with the global Jivamukti Yoga community?

We always make it a priority to be part of the annual Tribe Gathering events and we regularly invite guest teachers from other cities to teach at our studio. Of course, we also attend the Director’s meetings with other studio directors – online and in-person.

16) What is your favorite time of day for your sadhana and why?

I love practicing in the morning, but I sometimes alternate and practice in the evening just to enjoy the improved flexibility.

17) What is your favorite vegan recipe?

I love everything Mexican, especially tacos with chili beans, mango salsa and guacamole or chili sin carne.
